Here in Great Britain there are medical standards defined by the 1988 Road Traffic Act which a driver must maintain if driving privileges are to continue. Details of these standards are contained in two publications produced by the Medical advisory Branch of the D.V.L.A. (Driver and Vehicle Licence Authority).

For most people driving a vehicle is an every day activity and one which can have serious safety implications. When you pass your driving test the privilege of holding a drivers licence will stand unquestioned until you reach the age of seventy. Once a person reaches this age the holder of the drivers licence will be asked by the D.V.L.A. to seek advice from there G.P. (General Practitioner) as to there fitness to continue driving. This review is carried out every three years.

If your medical state affects your driving

Unfortunately not all people maintain a sound medical condition from the time they pass their driving test to the time they reach seventy years of age. If the holder of the drivers licence has an accident or illness action may have to be taken. It is the responsibility of the driving licence holder to inform the D.V.L.A. immediately if they have or acquire any physical impairments or medical condition which affects or is likely to affect the licence holder’s fitness to drive if that condition is likely to last longer than three months.

Part of what Independence Driving Centre do is to help people who are privileged in holding a drivers licence and become Physically impaired or have a medical condition which is likely to last longer than three months including elderly motorists can all be advised to make informed decisions about there outdoor mobility requirements.
